During our events, there is sometimes an internal master of ceremonies (a member/employee of the company organizing the event), and sometimes the master of ceremonies is external (someone hired for the sole purpose of organizing the event).

We don't have a cut-dried preference anyway. The ratio ends up being around 70% internal, 30% external. There are advantages to either approach. Recently, however, an internal master of ceremonies - who was already good enough - asked us what the external/professional emcees did that they didn't do, and what they could do to be better.

There are several advantages to having an external master of ceremonies - which we will discuss here. The following entry will discuss the benefits of having an internal master of ceremonies. These benefits certainly do not hold for ALL external facilitators - and we have seen that internal facilitators also have many of these attributes.
